Autism and English as a Second Language (Multiple)

Definition

The definition of multiple exceptionalities is an individual is medically diagnosed with a combination of two or more disorder. Autism is defined as a neurological developmental disorder that mainly affects a person's ability to communicate, form relationships, and respond appropriately to the environment. Autism affects student’s social abilities, which impacts their communication. English as a Second language and English language learns are students either new to the country or Canadian born student who have a first language other than English spoken at home. They maybe proficient in their mother tongue but may need support in the language of English. They may have limited literacy skills due to limited support in English at home. Often many parents may struggle with speaking English themselves.
